This week’s PBS Feature Album is BLACKPRINT, the long-awaited debut mixtape from proud Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung, Kalkadoon and Yirendali sovereign woman Miss Kaninna.
A history-making six-time ARIA Award nominee, multi-award-winner, and leader whose cultural influence extends far beyond the stage, Miss Kaninna's genre-defying approach provides a staunch foundation for a new artist with an urgency for change.
BLACKPRINT is an honest insight into genuine feeling - from a singular artist, creative force, compelling performer and leader, as Miss Kaninna continues to make history and level up with every move. A title that's always appealed to Miss Kaninna for its implication: "we know we’re the key to start of civilisation, we're literally the blueprint and we don't care if white people agree or not, we aren't gonna wait for you" she says, the six-track mixtape consists mainly of freestyles that gradually transformed into songs in front of heaving stadium crowds at home and internationally. A supercharged vehicle to express joy, anger, freedom and frustration, BLACKPRINT is rooted firmly in old school hip-hop ('MOB TIES', 'HANDOUT' ft. Jamahl Yami) with influences spanning the genre's eras, pulling from funk/soul/R&B and pop ('LOOK AT ME NOW' ft. Kobie Dee), rock, punk, grunge, bass-driven club music ('STOLEN WAGES', 'BLACKPRINT'), all delivered with Miss Kaninna's world-class panache and urgent resonance. Produced by Miss Kaninna with additional production via Lucy Blomkamp (6lack, Mallrat, perfectworld) and executively produced by Nikodimos (Hiatus Kaiyote, Genesis Owusu) at friendship studios on Wurundjeri Country, it follows globally acclaimed, ARIA-nominated award-winning 2024 EP KANINNA.
